Jelgava Local Municipality (JLM) is located in the very heart of Latvia in Zemgale region. It borders with Republic of Lithuania in the south. It has favorable geographical location – 42 km from Capital City Riga and it surrounds the 4th largest city in Latvia with national importance – Jelgava.

Challenge for the pilot
The health of children is vital in the ensuring of health of society in general. Food is one of cornerstones of wellbeing of humans. Therefore, it’s essential to offer healthy, local and sustainable food from the early childhood and school years. The impact of a healthy diet on human health and awareness of society is gradually increasing. The challenge is to introduce more healthy, local and seasonal catering at education establishments.
How the model for cross-sectoral cooperation benefitted the pilot?
The model for cross-sectoral cooperation allowed us to bring the pieces of puzzle (various stakeholders) together and work on solving the challenge.
How did the pilot benefit the life of the residents?
Around 200 children were involved in the pilot project activities. According to the final evaluation, there has been shift in children’s mindset – a significant number of children have reported their consumption of fruit and vegetables has increased. It can be considered that also families are using more healthy products.
How was extended reality (XR) used in pilot?
VR game PRO-portion was developed with the aim to introduce children with healthy meal principles. If the chosen food is not healthy or balanced (not in appropriate proportions of fruits and vegetables, proteins, carbohydrates and oils), the plate ruins and one has to collect the meal from the beginning. VR game is aimed for playing for school children.
What was the value of having transnational peers in Healthy Boost project?
We have similar pilot project with our peer - Suwalki municipality. It was beneficial to compare and talk over our activities and solve common challenges.
